Barry Rowan, a longtime public-company executive and author of The Spiritual Art of Business, joins the Catholic Morning Show to share how God transformed his view of money, wealth, and work. He lays out three biblical principles for Christian stewardship and explains why surrender is the gateway to real freedom. Barry also shares how his prayer life grew from ten minutes a day to a month-long silent retreat, and why he's pursuing an "encore calling" instead of retirement.
Barry Rowan joins Deacon Mark Campbell in studio for an extended conversation on faith, money, and meaningful work. Barry has been part of eight companies, six of them highly successful, including one that sold for $10 billion. He shares how, as a Harvard Business School graduate helping lead one of the fastest-growing companies in the U.S., he hit a crisis of meaning, stepped away from church, and spent eight months reading sixteen books before God rebuilt his faith with Christ as the foundation.
Barry then walks through three principles that reshaped his relationship with money:
Drawing on Ecclesiastes 5:19, the parable of the talents, and the rich young man, Barry explains why wealth is both a gift and a responsibility meant for the good of others.
In the second half, Barry discusses how to keep a life of surrender as responsibilities grow and how to live an integrated life with Christ at the center of self, family, and society. He describes his prayer life moving from discipline to craving to "a life of prayer," built on listening more than talking. He also explains why he and his family chose to walk with the poor, which has led to 25 trips to Central America and a focus on clean water for the rural poor in Honduras and Guatemala. Barry closes with the story behind his book, which grew out of roughly 35 years of struggle and more than 10,000 journal pages, and describes his current work: board service, writing, speaking, mentoring Christian leaders, and chairing the Harvard Business School Christian Fellowship.
