Allison Franz and Tonia Martin of Mary's Helping Hands join Deacon Mark Campbell to preview the annual Born to Run 5K and 1-mile fun run, a timed race and family-friendly morning that supports moms, dads, and caregivers of young children across central Iowa.
Race details: Saturday, November 14, at 9 a.m. at Confluence Brewing Company, 1235 Thomas Beck Rd., Des Moines. The 5K and 1-mile fun run start together and loop around Gray's Lake, and the 5K is professionally chip-timed. Registration is $37 through Sunday, October 25, at 11:59 p.m., then $45, with age-based pricing for kids and family discounts for groups of four or more. Walkers are welcome. Day-of packet pickup is at Confluence from 8 to 8:30 a.m.
Not a runner? Come anyway. Look for live music from Des Moines musician Josh Sinclair, coffee, breakfast pizza, hot cocoa, donuts, massages, and athletic socks for every participant. Confluence opens its doors for a warm family gathering, and volunteer spots are still open.
Allison explains the mission: Mary's Helping Hands provides hygiene items, clothing, pack 'n plays, diaper bags, and other essentials to families with children two and under who are facing hardship. Tonia, director of operations, shares how the need keeps growing. Last month the ministry served a record 610 families. She tells stories of God's providence at Mary's Helping Hands, from a surprise donation arriving within minutes of running out of supplies to a stroller appearing just when a mom of twins needed one.
