Bo Bonner and Deacon Mark Campbell open a crisp, rainy first day of fall on the Tuesday of the Twenty-Fifth Week in Ordinary Time. Today's Mass is at 8:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart in Osage (89.3 FM). The hosts also swap childhood pet stories, including a grandmother's pet skunk, prompted by the tale of "Big Guy," a 100-pound African spurred tortoise. Big Guy was captured after more than three weeks on the loose in eastern North Carolina, and along the way he crossed four lanes of Highway 70.
Jason Gale of TAN Books joins the show to introduce the Purgatorian Manual. The Redemptorist Fathers first compiled this prayer book in 1894, and TAN has now restored it in a keepsake binding. It includes morning and evening devotions, prayers for the Mass for the Dead, the Rosary for the Dead, a 31-day program of prayers for the Holy Souls, short indulgenced prayers, and meditations from Saint Alphonsus Liguori, including his reflection on eternity. Pages at the front and back let you write in the names of loved ones who have died, so you can pray for them by name. Jason recommends getting the book before November, the month of the Holy Souls. Deacon Mark and Bo also look ahead to the One Million Children Praying the Rosary campaign, organized by the pontifical foundation Aid to the Church in Need. As announced on air, it runs October 1–7, and Pope Leo XIV will pray the Rosary for peace on October 1 with 700 to 1,000 children at the Lourdes Grotto in the Vatican Gardens.
