Deacon Mark Campbell and Ayden Pugh open Wednesday on the Memorial of Saint Padre Pio, with Mass today at 8 a.m. at Saint Mary's in Centerville (105.3 FM). Saint of the Day remembers the Capuchin priest who received the stigmata on September 20, 1918, heard confessions by the hour, founded the House for the Relief of Suffering hospital, and died on this day in 1968.
Barry Rowan joins Deacon Mark in studio for two segments. Barry has helped start or turn around eight companies, including one that sold for $10 billion, and chairs the Harvard Business School Christian Fellowship. He describes the crisis of meaning that hit him in his late twenties, the eight months he spent reading sixteen books while God rebuilt his faith "brick by brick," and how he finally surrendered his life to Christ.
Barry shares three principles that changed how he views money. First, move from owner to steward, because everything belongs to God, not just the 10 percent. Second, decide how much is enough and set a "financial finish line." Third, look at money through the rear-view mirror instead of the windshield, treating it as a gift to manage rather than a goal to chase. He also explains how to keep surrendering as responsibility grows, how to organize life in concentric circles of self, family, and society with Christ at the center, and how his prayer life grew into "a life of prayer." It started at ten minutes a day, became an hour a day at 40, then included annual eight-day silent retreats and finally a month-long silent retreat. Barry and his family will take their 25th trip to Central America this November, where they've focused on bringing clean water to the rural poor in Honduras and Guatemala.
