Episode Notes

Bo Bonner and Deacon Mark Campbell close out the week on the Memorial of St. John Henry Newman, with Mass today at 8 a.m. at St. Patrick's in Melrose.

Fr. Fabian Moncada of Our Lady of the Americas Parish in Des Moines helps listeners prepare for the 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time and the parable of the wedding feast (Matthew 22:1–14) — why the Sunday Eucharist is the great banquet of heaven on earth, why our excuses for skipping it fall short, and how the "wedding garment" of grace prepares us to receive Christ's real presence.

Bo then makes the case for St. John Henry Newman as a saint within reach of every English-speaking Catholic. Newman's feast falls on October 9, the anniversary of his reception into the Catholic Church in 1845, and Bo shares a local connection: his Uncommon Good co-host, Dr. Bud Marr, was part of the team that petitioned for Newman to be declared a Doctor of the Church. Bo's recommended starting points: Meditations and Devotions, the Parochial and Plain Sermons (start with Sermon 1, on holiness), and the Apologia Pro Vita Sua — nearly all of it free to read at NewmanReader.org from the National Institute for Newman Studies.

Brian Egan catches up with Dawn Prosser, director of communications for the Diocese of Sioux City, on three upcoming events:

Emily Blake, executive director of St. Damascus Gild, a new sacred arts nonprofit serving eastern Iowa and the Midwest, previews Saturday, October 10 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Iowa City: a Musician's Retreat Day led by composer Ryan Everson, a seminarian for the Diocese of Phoenix, followed by a free public sacred music concert at 6:30 p.m. featuring Everson's compositions, a University of Iowa quartet, and musicians from across eastern Iowa. Emily also shares the Gild's vision for workshops and masterclasses in visual, performing, literary, and liturgical arts, its official launch gala December 3 in Cedar Rapids, and a January event at UNI's Gallagher Bluedorn on St. Pier Giorgio Frassati.
