David Esquiliano, rector of the Cathedral of the Epiphany and pastor of the Cathedral Parish in Sioux City, joins the show to explain the Blue Mass — a Catholic tradition in the United States dating to 1934, named for the blue uniforms of police officers, and extended in the Diocese of Sioux City to firefighters, EMTs, and all first responders. Fr. David, who also serves as chaplain to the Sioux City Police Department, unpacks why the Mass is tied to St. Michael the Archangel, patron of law enforcement, and why it's open to everyone regardless of faith background. The Diocese of Sioux City's fourth annual Blue Mass is Monday, September 28 at 5:30 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Epiphany at 10th and Douglas in downtown Sioux City, followed by a Knights of Columbus meal at 6:30 p.m. — including a drive-through option for first responders who are on duty.
