What Is Reparation? 365 Days of Penance & Prayer to Console Christ - Fr. Lawrence Carney - 11/02/2026
Episode Summary
Fr. Lawrence Carney explains Catholic reparation — repairing the damage sin causes between God and the human family — and introduces his new TAN Books title, A Year of Reparations: 365 Days of Penance and Prayer. He unpacks vicarious reparation for poor sinners and the examples of St. Alphonsus Liguori, St. Joan of Arc, and Sister Marie de Saint-Pierre, the Carmelite behind the Holy Face devotion. On All Souls Day, he offers practical first steps, from daily Mass and the Rosary to indulgences and the Archconfraternity of the Holy Face.
Episode Notes
How do you "work out your salvation with fear and trembling" (Philippians 2:12) in a culture that has forgotten God's rights? Fr. Lawrence Carney, a priest of the Diocese of Wichita and author of The Secret of the Holy Face, says the answer is reparation.
In this conversation:
- Why reparation matters now: Repairing the relationship between God and our human family, and restoring the honor owed to Him under the first three commandments
- Vicarious reparation: Praying and sacrificing for poor sinners who have no one to pray for them — as Our Lady of Fatima asked — so we don't arrive at our judgment alone
- St. Alphonsus Liguori: How his suffering became reparation for the souls the Redemptorists would win
- St. Joan of Arc: The peasant girl whose victories preserved Catholic France, which later received the Sacred Heart and Holy Face devotions
- Sister Marie de Saint-Pierre & the Holy Face: The 1840s Carmelite of Tours who received the Holy Face devotion, and why Jesus called reparation to His Face the highest devotion
- Where to start: Daily Mass, the Rosary, indulgences (including visiting a cemetery during the All Souls octave), and the Archconfraternity of the Holy Face, elevated by Pope Leo XIII
- How the book works: One short prayer of reparation for each day (about 30 seconds) and one saint of reparation for each of 52 weeks
